Educational Advocacy at Cherrywood Tutoring
At Cherrywood Tutoring, we understand that navigating the educational system can be a challenging experience for both students and their families, especially when it comes to advocating for the support that students need to succeed. As an experienced educational advocate and a proud member of the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA), I am dedicated to helping families access the right resources, accommodations, and support systems for their child's academic and personal growth.
What is Educational Advocacy?
Educational advocacy involves guiding families through the complexities of the educational system to ensure that students receive the appropriate services and accommodations. This is especially critical for students with unique learning needs, such as those with ADHD, Dyslexia, or other learning differences. Whether your child requires a 504 Plan, Individualized Education Program (IEP), or specific classroom accommodations, my role as an advocate is to empower you with the knowledge and support to navigate the system with confidence.
I work closely with parents to understand their child’s strengths and challenges, attend school meetings, and ensure that educational plans are aligned with your child’s needs. I advocate for services that provide an environment where your child can thrive academically and socially, creating a path for them to succeed long-term.
How Executive Functioning Coaching Enhances Educational Advocacy
In addition to advocacy, I integrate executive functioning coaching into my approach to provide comprehensive, tailored support for each student. Executive functioning skills are crucial to academic success, as they involve the mental processes that help individuals plan, focus, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks. For students with ADHD, Dyslexia, or other learning challenges, these skills are often underdeveloped, which can make organization, time management, and goal setting difficult.
Through personalized executive functioning coaching, I teach students how to:
- Organize and prioritize tasks: Learning how to break down large projects and assignments into manageable steps.
- Manage time effectively: Creating schedules, setting realistic goals, and using tools like planners to stay on track.
- Improve attention and focus: Developing strategies to stay engaged in the classroom and at home.
- Build self-regulation skills: Strengthening the ability to control impulses and maintain focus on long-term goals.
Integrating these skills with educational advocacy ensures that your child not only has access to the accommodations they need but also has the tools to use them effectively. With a strong foundation in executive functioning, students are better able to advocate for themselves, manage their workload, and build confidence in their academic abilities.
A Collaborative Approach to Success
By combining educational advocacy and executive functioning coaching, I take a holistic approach to supporting your child. I believe that the foundation of effective learning is built on mutual respect, clear communication, and a deep understanding of each student’s needs. As we work together, I will help you understand your rights as a parent and ensure that the right support systems are in place, all while teaching your child the skills they need to thrive in the classroom and beyond.
